A June 2026 scoping review mapped 237 AI-enhanced point-of-care diagnostic studies for infectious disease in resource-limited settings — and found that only 16 reported prospective field validation. Publication rates are exponential; validation rates are not. The clinician deciding whether a febrile patient receives antibiotics tonight or a referral tomorrow does not choose between 237 tools: they choose between 16.
